Cultural Programs (main stage)
Activities:
AKKA invites participation from Kannada
artists (professional and amateur) for the 2002 World Kannada
Conference. Groups and individuals can apply to perform as
a part of the main conference program. The emphasis in this
program will be to reflect Kannada culture and heritage. Please
make sure the programs are in concurrence with the conference
theme. Items should be creative and reflect Kannada culture.
The list of items includes, but is not limited to:
- Folk Song, Karaoke, Classical
Songs, Light Music Orchestra. etc
- Folk Dances, Classical Dances,
Fusion Dances, Dance Dramas, etc
- Parody, Drama, Skits, Mimicry,
etc
Program Participation Rules:
To make this event successful we want to ensure that all
participants are aware of the following rules and regulations.
- Participants are responsible
for all the costumes for the programs.
- Solo items will be considered
for competition only. Please contact competition subcommittee
for solo items. Only group items will be considered for
main stage programs.
- Time duration for each item
is 5 to 20 minutes. Dramas / plays will be limited to 35
minutes in length.
- Completed entry forms should
be postmarked to us by April
19th, 2002
- Each item should be submitted
on videotapes in its entirety before April
30th, 2002. Those who would like their tapes returned
should contact the committee in advance. AKKA or the organizing
committee is not liable for lost videotapes or misplaced
communications.
- The tape must contain the program
in its entirety and be of high quality to enable the audition
committee to review the program effectively. Tapes of poor
quality will not be reviewed.
- An Audition Committee will
review all items for quality, presentation, and appropriateness.
- Decisions of the Cultural
Committee will be communicated to item organizers
by May 30th, 2002.
Clearly list the contact information in the entry forms.
- All decisions by the Cultural
Committee are final.
- The organizer for the selected
item(s) should submit their production requirements (like
lighting, sound, stage requirements) to the Cultural Committee
by June 14th, 2002.
Item organizers are required to bring their own costumes
and props.
- The Production Team will provide
the production details to the organizer by June
30th, 2002.
- Green room facilities will be
provided
- A participant can participate in
more than one competition, but due to the time constraints
we suggest to participate in the maximum of 5 to 7
competitions only
- All the competitions will not be
conducted on same day. Time table will be provided shortly
- The Green room facilities will be
provided
AKKA requires all participants and organizers to register
for the convention. Participants are required to pre-register
by the first early registration deadline to facilitate planning

Competitions
Items, Rules, and Regulations:
- Entry form, Registration, and
Deadline.
- It
is mandatory that all participating artists, choreographers,
and organizers in any of the competitions must be registered
to AKKA conference.
- A
separate entry form should be used for participants.
- Completed
entry forms should reach the competitions committee
by June 30th,
2002.
- General Rules
- All
competitions are open for all age groups. (Please refer
to age group)
- We
prefer all items to be in KANNADA only.
- Performers
are required to bring their own costumes, settings and
any other required stage decorations for their performance.
- Choreographers/Organizers
are responsible for any special effects at their cost
unless agreed by conference competitions committee in
advance.
- Evaluation/Judging
- Each
category will have a column for judges discretion
- The
decision of the judges in regards to any of the competitions
will be un-biased, un-coached, and definitely final
and non-negotiable.
- If
any entrant does not follow the given time limits, that
entrant's entry will be automatically disqualified.
In order to be fair and equitable Conference competitions
committee may modify or change any of the rules stipulated
without prior notice to participants.
- Age group
- Different Age groups are

Group I (5 to 8), Group II (9 to 12), Group III
(13 to 15), Group IV (16 to 18),
Group V (Above 19 years)
- Participants
(Solo/Group) must be of required age for that particular
category (Solo/Group) on or before August 30th 2002.
- Rules for
- Drawing/Painting Competitions

Drawing paper will be supplied by AKKA.

Participants have to bring their own drawing materials.
- Essay Writing and Debate
- For
Adults, Essay Writing and Debate topics will be
given on the spot.
- For
Children only, please refer www.akkaonline.org for
the Essay and Debate topics.
- Plays/Skits
-
Plays/Skits should be acceptable and decent nature.
- Dance
-
Languages used for dance items should be in Kannada
and/or Sanskrit only.
- Group
Movie or Folk dance items require minimum of 5 participants;
Classical group dance items require a minimum of
3 participants.

If we have more then 5 entries for each classical
dance like Kuchipudi, Kathak, Odissi, etc, we will
consider as a separate category.

Please keep two good copies of audiotapes or CD's
and provide appropriate copy to organizers before
one item prior to yours (have it cued and ready
to go). The tapes are your responsibility.
- Singing

Only Kannada Songs are allowed.

Group items require minimum of 5 participants.
- Instrumental
- Participants are required
to bring their own instruments.

M.C. Rules:
- Any person / Group who wishes to M.C. AKKA cultural program
will have to send their entry form (with or without videotape)
within the deadline.
- Any person or Group who wishes to M.C. will have to audition
in front of compeering committee personally or through videotape
submissions. The Committee will decide and notify respective
person / group. Committee's decision is final.
- Person / Group should be fluent both in English & Kannada.
- Person / Group should be able to project correct pronunciations
and clear enunciation.
- Person / Group will not offend anybody in the audience
sentimentally or verbally.
- Person / Group should be able to present at a correct
pace (neither too slow nor too fast).
- Person / Group with prior stage presence will be given
preference.
- Diction will be given high importance.
- M.C. participants can come in pairs and may be of any
age group.
- Selection criteria will include 90% of Kannadigas residing
in Detroit and 10% of Kannadigas residing out of state who
come with their own group.
